As a member of the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Board of Directors, I would like to help commemorate IEDC’s 90th anniversary and the launch of Economic Development Week in North America – May 8-14th.
The economic development efforts provided by economic developers are being showcased this week and in light of this celebration, I would be like to kick off a week-long blog series that highlights the work of the City’s Economic Development Office and how it positively impacts the community.
Economic developers are charged with generating economic growth, creating better jobs for residents and facilitating an improved quality of life. The industry remains as complex, challenging and rewarding as ever.
Throughout my career as an economic development professional, I have welcomed many businesses to our city and watched them grow. I have also had opportunities to promote Mississauga globally and I have developed strategies that will help Mississauga transform into a global hub of creative and innovative activity where talent and business thrive.
Just last week, I had the opportunity to meet with the Honourable William Morneau, Minister of Finance along with: Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development; Members of Parliament Peter Fonseca (Mississauga East-Cooksville); Gagan Sikand (Mississauga-Streetsville) and Sven Spengemann (Mississauga-Lakeshore) during a visit to Mississauga. I was able to share some of the exciting things that our Economic Development Office is doing to promote and support innovation in our city.
It is satisfying to know that the work of economic development is acknowledged by all levels of government, our business and community stakeholders and our education and industry partners. Together, we strive to achieve our City’s economic development goals; to become a global business magnet, to embrace a culture of innovation and to build a knowledge economy that continues to grow and prosper.
CHEERS TO US!
