Maker Mississauga is a new initiative brought to you by the Mississauga Library System. This innovative initiative provides library users with access to new technologies such as a 3D printer and other specialized tools and equipment to create, build and develop things. The goal of the project is to encourage users to work together and learn new skills.
A 5th Generation 3D Printer is available for customer use to print predesigned items or submit their own designs. Printing starts at $1, plus $0.05 per minute. There are also two sewing machines and sewing experts available to offer assistance related to sewing, crafts and Do it Yourself (DIY) projects.
The Library also offers a variety of programs for all ages including a LEGO™ related program and digital filmmaking programs for all ages that allow participants to develop their technology skills, creativity and imagination, all while learning about movie making and creating fun stories. Green screen and stop motion programs are also offered throughout the year.
There are also many electronic programs available to help promote innovative thinking including: MaKey MaKey which turns everyday objects into computer keys that are combined with online programs to make things work; Squishy Circuits lets you create your own electronic sculptures that light up, move, and make sounds; Drawdio an electronic pencil that lets you turn everyday objects into musical instruments; and Snap Circuits, that use lights, buzzers, fans, and switches to develop innovative creations.
