I had the opportunity to speak at the Design for Manufacturing Summit #18 held on November 3, 2016 in Leslieville (downtown Toronto). I was on a panel discussing advanced manufacturing ecosystems.
Also on this panel were Jason MacFarlane, Head of Advanced Manufacturing Venture Services at MaRS, and Ryan Wicklum, Manager, Supply Chain, at Clearpath Robotics.
Companies in Canada, Ontario, and Mississauga, are looking to procure closer to home. There are a few reasons for this including the low Canadian dollar, faster turnaround time, more control and a closer relationship with suppliers with respect to the quality of the components they procure. Often, companies that are located a kilometre apart do not know the complementary capabilities of each other. My role as Advanced Manufacturing Business Integrator is to assist in the development of these B2B connections so that companies can have an improved and more efficient supply chain. The Design for Manufacturing Summit was a great opportunity to showcase the leading edge work of the City of Mississauga in supporting its advanced manufacturing sector. There were a number of Mississauga companies participating as presenters at this event including RMF Design and Manufacturing, Xerox Research Centre Canada, Creation Technologies, and Anubis 3D.
Our Economic Development Office recently hosted a technical breakfast meeting at Renishaw Canada to educate Mississauga companies on the ROI on implementing additive manufacturing technologies into their business operations. This also functioned as a great opportunity for our local businesses to network with solutions providers in the 3D printing space at no cost to them. We intend to hold more technical breakfast meetings in future on topics that companies tell me are critical to their business operations and continue to foster these B2B connections.
