There is a big idea in the minds of many of today’s youth. There are many examples of young entrepreneurs embarking on their journey into entrepreneurship feet first with great success. Others need support and experience to cultivate their ideas into a successful business. This is where a business coach and/or mentor enter into the picture. Mentorship has proven to be valuable to the development and growth of small businesses. The learning experience provided through a mentor’s expertise acts as a valuable contribution to a young entrepreneur’s business journey.
The City of Mississauga’s Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre (MBEC) delivers two young entrepreneur programs each year, Summer Company and Starter Company, to support youth 15 years to 29 years launch, develop and grow businesses in the Mississauga area. The Summer Company and Starter Company programs are funded by the Government of Ontario.
MBEC could not deliver these young entrepreneur programs without the valuable support provided by its mentors. Mentors not only volunteer their time to support the business community, but also share invaluable knowledge and experience, and provide encouragement to young entrepreneurs.
Being a mentor to support youth business ventures is an opportunity to give back to the community. The rewards mentoring provide are intangible and mentoring can provide mutual benefits to a mentor and mentee.
“Working as a Mentor on a variety of Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre programs over the past few years has been very much an enjoyable experience and I intend to continue. Having a positive impact on Mississauga-based young people’s small businesses or start-ups is more than satisfying, particularly as this helps ensure that the individual participants and their families are more likely to have more productive and financially secure lives. An additional benefit for me is that my involvement is also a personal learning experience, as we work through business solutions with the program participants. – Eric Roberts, Business Consultant
Due to the demand of MBEC’s young entrepreneur program, MBEC is seeking support from experienced entrepreneurs/business owners or business professionals who are willing to become a volunteer mentor to share their knowledge, expertise and wisdom to inspire and help young entrepreneurs start, build and grow their businesses. Mentoring will require from approximately one to six hours of a mentor’s time per month.
