Born and raised in Mexico, Paola Silk left her home country and moved to Canada in 2008. Paola always did her best to stay connected with her Mexican culture and roots. With the inspiration of her Mexican heritage and a passion for fashion, Paola decided to combine the two and started her business, Shilango. Shilango is an online boutique that sells imported ethically sourced jewelries handcrafted in Mexico by local artisans.
Through the help of the Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre and the young entrepreneur program, Starter Company, Paola received support for her start-up venture. As a participant of the program, Paola received business training, business coaching and mentorship, and a grant of up to $5000 to help with her new business.
“The Starter Company was without a doubt the key to my success with SHILANGO. I couldn’t have done it without the mentorship, the grant and all the resources available for young entrepreneurs.”
Since her participation in the Starter Company program, Paola’s business, Shilango continues to grow and recently participated in the very first Mississauga Fashion Week in November 2015.
Paola is just one example of a many young entrepreneurs across Ontario turning their business ideas into reality with support from local business enterprise centres and young entrepreneur programs funded by the Province of Ontario.
