I am excited to announce the launch of the City’s new five-year Life Sciences Cluster Strategy. The strategy identifies priorities to support the growth and development of the life sciences sector and is the first of its kind for a Canadian municipality.
Currently, Mississauga’s life sciences sector is ranked as the second largest by employment in Canada with 430 companies employing over 22,000 people. Our cluster is more diverse than ever, contributing to new technologies and innovations that benefit healthcare and wellness globally.
The extensive engagement with our cluster stakeholders was critical in developing this strategy. We know that to be truly successful, we need the continuous commitment and interaction between industry, government and cluster stakeholders. The strategy represents a series of actions that will shape the future outcomes and success of Mississauga’s life sciences cluster and ultimately position Mississauga as a global business leader.
The strategy contains seven main goals:
- Create Opportunities for Life Sciences Partnerships and Leadership
- Create Opportunities for Effective Networking and Collaboration
- Build a Robust Life Sciences Talent Pipeline
- Provide Access to Efficient Transit Options
- Create a Centralized Life Sciences Hub
- Become a Proven Destination for Life Sciences
- Build a Supportive Business and Investment Environment
Specific key performance indicators will be evaluated and monitored on an annual basis to measure strategic progress and success.
The Economic Development Office welcomes our new Life Sciences Consultant, Avtar Sodhi whose role is dedicated to the successful implementation of the strategy. Avtar will help Mississauga’s life sciences sector by: creating an environment that connects firms to each other to encourage industry discussions; build and grow local supply chains; and create opportunities for continued innovation and collaboration.
