The Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre (MBEC) hosted the third of their four-part Digital Marketing Seminar Series on October 18th, 2016. With keynote speaker, Javed S. Khan from EMpression: A Marketing Services Company, guests were engaged in learning about some of the most popular social media channels available such as: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
In this seminar, Javed gave a brief overview of each social media channel, highlighted the key features and advantage points for each. Javed emphasized the need to choose a social media channel that resonates the best with your audience. He described the process of finding this out by ‘listening’ online. He advised business owners to take the time to figure out which social media platform would work best for their business and to not jump onto every social media channel. The ‘listening’ process acquires inside information about where you should be; see what existing businesses and your competitors are doing.
An important rule to remember from this seminar, regardless of the social media channel, was the 50/30/20 rule. When posting content on social media it is important to keep your audience in mind. Javed explains, “50% of your content should be interesting and entertaining to your audience. Remember that people use social media to find out what’s new and interesting with their friends, family, and businesses they like.” Javed goes on to suggest some ways in which businesses can make the platform interactive and conversational: “share an inspirational quote image, an interesting fact, or a fun photo that relates to your business or industry.” Next, he explains that “30% of the content you share should provide information and be useful in helping your readers. Think tips, stats, education, and curated content from blogs or news sites.” Finally, the part of the rule which every business jumps into first is in fact, the remaining 20%. This remaining 20% of the content, Javed says, can be about your business. “It can be about calls to action, and asking people to take the next step: purchase something, register for an event, read a blog poster, learn about a new product or service.”
JAVED’S TIP OF THE DAY: “Remember the 50/30/20 Rule when posting content on Social Media.” Regardless of the social media channel your business chooses, this rule can help the success of your business online.
