The idea for Ricky Pacheco’s Mississauga-based company POP49 Inc. began when Pacheco moved to Canada in 2005 with a concrete idea of what he wanted as a business. Pacheco says that in 1989, he founded a business called Medalion Enterprises in South Africa and when he moved to Canada, he incorporated it as POP49 in January 2012. POP49 concentrates on manufacturing, marketing and product design. He shows his interest for creating and working on physical products by stating, “I specifically wanted to start something that would allow me to invent and develop products.”
Powered by sheer passion, Pacheco and his love for building products led to POP49 Inc. flourishing since starting in Pacheco’s garage in 2005 and making its way to being one of the leading design companies of experiential marketing products in North America.
POP49’s success did not come without its struggles. The process of building his business was (and still is) a constant learning experience from how to hire employees and to how to generate complex documents. One of the main struggles for Pacheco was the paperwork. He admits, “the biggest obstacle in starting my business was learning all the different paperwork components needed to make all the parts of the business work together.”
Pacheco did not let these obstacles deter him. It only served to motivate him more. He learned from various business professionals and had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He understood that the best way to keep a business growing is to be able to adapt to the various changes and trends in the industry. He says that “a thirst for knowledge is a major driver of our successes. We constantly upgrade our equipment and improve our skillsets. I’ve attended dozens of trade shows in multiple industries, as well as constantly watch the growing trends within our industry.”
As POP49 Inc. continues to grow, Pacheco mentions that because they are not tied to a particular product or service, they have the flexibility to really challenge themselves when clients approach them with unique and outlandish requests which only serves to make the experience a more interesting and rewarding one.
Pacheco expresses his appreciation of owning his own business by placing value on time management and how his business does not take away from spending time with his family. He says that he enjoys “the freedom to spend time with my kids during the day and the flexibility to take time off to spend with family.”
As a former client of Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre (MBEC), Pacheco credits MBEC’s ‘How to Run Your Own Business’ seminar for helping him with growing his business. He says that “one of my goals when I landed in Canada was to get informed on local ways; I knew that a course or networking group would be a first step. When I found the MBEC course it was perfect. The advice and information I gained from the seminar played a massive part to my success today.”
As an entrepreneur, the one key piece of advice that Pacheco wants to give to other aspiring entrepreneurs is to “do what you love and the money will follow.” With the continuing success of POP49 Inc., Pacheco has a bigger vision for his business. Since doubling in size over the past two years, POP49 is looking at expanding their space and hoping to create new and exciting products for their clients.
