The Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre (MBEC) helps over 4,000 businesses and business owners each year succeed with business-related resources and professional guidance. Kamp K-9 Inc. is a one-stop dog spot business located in the heart of Mississauga, owned by Sue Quinn, a former MBEC client and a long-time devotee to the services of dog daycare, boarding, and grooming, training and wellness.
With appearances on the Dragon’s Den in 2014 and recipient of the 2015 Mississauga Board of Trade Business Award of Excellence for New Business of the Year Award, the 2015 Mississauga South Rising Star Award for New Business of the Year, as well as the 2016 Mississauga South Rising Star Award for Community Impact Excellence, and nominated in 2016 for Employer of the Year by the Mississauga Board of Trade, Kamp K-9 Inc. has definitely created a name for itself in the world of dog care services. This success however did not come without great struggle and hard work. One of Sue’s biggest obstacles in launching her business was money. She says, “as much as you think you might need – you need at least 5 times more… [and] being a single mom, there was no ‘back-up’ person to keep expenses at home so I definitely had to get creative.”
Creativity is exactly what Sue used to further her business. Sue says “there is no other facility like mine. There is a ‘wow’ factor to this place.” Since Sue’s inception of her business in 2009 on paper, it turned into the launch of a bricks and mortar business in 2012 at the 20,000 square foot facility in Mississauga with safe rubber flooring and see-through walls for the ultimate 24/7 supervision. There is also a huge 10,000 square foot outdoor play area for more running room. Her long-term clients are a huge part of the reason Kamp K-9 Inc. has been able to maintain ground. “My clients are amazing and they are my best referral source for new business.” She advises, “it’s all about customer service – keeping both two-legged and four-legged clients happy keeps them, and people they know, coming back for more”.
Sue credits MBEC’s seminars and staff for helping her with her business. She recalls, “having the resources to review stuff and being able to ask questions to staff helped to keep me moving forward and to not give up.”
When asked what trait(s) an entrepreneur should possess, Sue says to “never give up – there will be lots of walls to climb – climb over top of them and make them a challenge that you can overcome. Keep moving forward toward your ultimate vision. Make it happen.” Her past experience has also given her a lot of valuable knowledge and insight into the world of business. “I worked in the banking industry for 32 years, and I believe it helped prepare me for some of the mindset and knowledge that I need to run my own business with today.”
Being her own boss now, Sue has full control over her business and her vision. Kamp K-9 Inc. will be in its fifth year of business in 2017, with no plans to stop. Watch out Oakville & Burlington – you are Sue’s next vision for locations.
