It can be frustrating to wake up to start a new day only to discover that somehow overnight you developed a pimple or a seemingly random flare up of acne on the side of your face. This is a common problem that some people go through. One of these people was Kushi Kaur.
For the past few years, Kaur struggled with acne. After visits to the dermatologist, Kaur did some research found a theory that the source of her skin problems might due to her cotton pillowcase, and that the pillowcase may also cause frizzy hair and fallout.
Kaur decided to do something about it. With her ambition, drive and entrepreneurial mindset, she invented the patent pending KleanCase: a 3-in-1 satin beauty pillowcase. Kaur saw her new product as an opportunity to help decrease the bacterial accumulation that often occurs on pillowcases, as well as lessens hair frizz and fallout. Kaur states,
“I wanted to create a product that could help offset any potential skin and hair problems by creating an alternative method to changing your pillowcase every day.”
With extensive research Kaur realized that, “every business has its unique challenges, and specifically mine was defining a market that had not existed before.” Along with her insatiable ambition and drive, as well as her participation in the Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre’s (MBEC) 2016 Summer Company program, young entrepreneur Kushi Kaur was able to launch KleanCase Corp.
“MBEC helped me immensely in regards to staying accountable towards my set goals on a weekly basis. Most importantly, the staff was great in helping me stay on track at the beginning stages of the business plan to execution. And the Summer Company program grant helped me obtain a patent pending for the intellectual property for the product. This was vital for KleanCase.”
Two years after Kaur came up with the idea of KleanCase and officially launching the business in 2016, the business continues to blossom with a wide range of innovative products and with the launch of “KleanTravel” which are easy to use fashionable and washable satin covers for travel neck pillows.
Currently, Kaur is concentrating on the growth of her business with the help of an intern that she recently hired. She is enjoying this next phase of her business development and is now able to focus on planning, strategy, seeking investors and developing more products for KleanCase corp.
Being a young entrepreneur is extremely rewarding but can come with its challenges. Kaur imparts some advice to fellow young entrepreneurs stressing that communication is important and “to always engage in valuable conversations, whether it is with mentors or other entrepreneurs. It’s extremely vital to connect and learn from one another because creating the right business model is essential when it comes to business.”
