Jerzy Judyn is a recent business law graduate from Carleton University and is currently pursuing his Masters at the University of Toronto. After working with many companies as a home painter, Jerzy decided to use his professional skills in painting combined with his educational background to embark on his journey in launching his own painting business called Urban Pro Painting. Urban Pro Painting provides residential and commercial interior and exterior painting, including deck staining and wood painting.
Jerzy credits the Summer Company young entrepreneur program in Mississauga in helping him launch a successful summer business. Through the Summer Company Program, Jerzy benefited from business training and mentorship, which helped him to learn valuable and transferable business and entrepreneurial skills. He says, “The program helps you focus on things that are most important and gives you guidance on operating those things…especially how to engage with other businesses.” One of the highlights of the program Jerzy recalls is when he had a class on pricing and talking to customers. “The mentors had lots of great ideas on how to talk about pricing with customers and everyone began sharing their approach to this situation.” One important lesson from this discussion Jerzy learned was to communicate to customers that it’s the “best price not the cheapest.”
When asked what trait(s) a young entrepreneur should possess, Jerzy said “You have to be very social and assertive. Engage with people, assert yourself, and present yourself in a business manner.” He encourages the younger generation to take advantage of what the Summer Company Program has to offer, with the training, mentoring, and grant opportunities. Jerzy states, “One great thing is the grant. You are given money to pursue your own idea and it’s awesome because you don’t have to convince other people to invest in your idea.”
Jerzy has come a long way since his journey began with the Summer Company Program this summer. He was amongst the top entrepreneurs in Mississauga’s Summer Company program, generating significant business and revenue in a short amount of time. Jerzy’s success with Urban-Pro Painting this past summer is a motivator to continue with other business ventures and in completing his Masters. Jerzy continues to manage his business while enrolled in school, although managing school work and his business can be a challenge – he remains loyal to his customers and business.
