Writing, painting, drawing and music are examples of creative outlets that inspire the lives of many people. When it comes to pursuing a career in the arts, genuine aspirations are often met with skepticism. However, with her bold artistry and drive, young entrepreneur Camille Lauren proves this notion wrong with her company art of Ciel.
art of Ciel is an arts-based creative business where Camille paints mixed media artwork that is inspired by nature, culture and emotion. She also creates custom commissions and illustrations, does body art, graphic design work, and paints live at special events including weddings, fashions shows and concerts. Pop by her studio and you’ll find her working on her most recent ‘Sea+Sand+Sky’ series, which is a nod to her island roots.
Camille originally registered art of Ciel as a business in 2013 through the Summer Company program offered in Brampton. Recently, Camille completed the Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre’s (MBEC) Starter Company program, where she expanded art of Ciel.
With a passion for the arts, Camille explores new initiatives and giving herself complete creative license to incorporate creative photography and design into her work. She says, “I’m bursting with desires to translate ideas into expressive creative forms. I’m always willing to experiment across mediums and delve into new genres.” While Camille was fearless in overcoming boundaries in her artwork, she admits that there were challenges in dealing with the expectations of being an artist and starting her business.
“When I began to take my art career seriously, it was a challenge to manage expectations and to find opportunities for emerging artists in the Peel region when compared to the Toronto arts landscape. I didn’t know how to make any significant progress.”
Camille overcame this challenge. As she was an artist and created work to sell, she was already an entrepreneur. She recognized that she needed to learn how to be a better entrepreneur in order to successfully start her business. Camille took it upon herself to get into as many business development programs, training sessions and presentations that she could find. Among them was the Brampton Entrepreneur’s Centre’s Summer Company Program and the MBEC’s Starter Company Program.
She credits both of these young entrepreneur programs for keeping her focus on the end goal by saying, “My entrepreneurial exploits kept my focus laser sharp. I came out of these programs feeling like an upgraded version of myself. The process of developing my business has given me a wealth of terms in which I can gauge my strengths and weaknesses. It has become a second lens for me to view my contribution to the world through.”
One thing that Camille remembers about her journey of creating her own business was that it can be easy to get discouraged, especially when her goals were seen as unrealistic by other people. When asked about what advice she would give to her fellow entrepreneurs, she responded, “Do everything you can to prepare yourself. Invest in yourself first; your mind, your health, and your skill-set, because you are by far your most valuable resource. Arts and culture are both vital because they connect people with one another on a visceral level.” She also stresses that it is important to not lose sight of the reason why you started the idea for a business.
“Keep creating, be courageous and share yourself because we want to see the real you.”
Art of Ciel continues to be successful as Camille defines her creative world and refines her business sense. Ultimately, she aims to spark conversations across cultures by using the language of color that art provides.
