In September of 2015, Toronto Pearson alongside the Honorable Glen Murray, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, celebrated the first honey harvest at its new honeybee apiary known as YYbeeZ.
Toronto Pearson International Airport and local beekeeper, Kuldip Jassal, installed 15 hives on airport grounds this past June. Each hive can house 50,000 to 60,000 bees and produce approximately 60lbs of honey annually. That’s close to 1 million bees and 900lbs of honey!
Over 30% of our food depends on pollinators, and with the decline in bee populations it is easy to see the importance of such initiatives.
Environmental responsibility is at the heart of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), and all activities undertaken at the airport are carried out with this in mind. The apiary is just one of many ways the airport is committing to sustainability.
